# Q&A Interview with Stacey Mrva, Metal Sculptor

__SkillHero:__ Tell us about your journey into metalwork and the trades. Did you have a traditional career in the trades before venturing into teaching and art?

__Stacey Mrva:__ I actually came to welding through art. I was exposed to a lot of different mediums of art in high school which lead me into jewelry making, and then that evolved into studying metal smithing at Syracuse University. There, I fell in love with welding and knew it was what I wanted to do. I was essentially self-taught, as the university just provided the equipment and I learned by doing. After graduating, my parents bought me a Miller 185 welder, which I still use today.

__SkillHero:__ You hear about people with a construction or manufacturing background that develop more creative ways to hone their craft later in their career, but your path is quite unique! Can you tell us more about your journey and how Ironwood Studios and how it came to be?

__Stacey Mrva:__ For over 25 years, I focused on my own artistic and functional metalwork such as custom railings and furniture, but it's feast or famine being an artist. I was working a day job in management in retail, but wanted to find a way to bring in more revenue so I could quit my job and focus on doing the thing I loved and enjoyed - welding.

During the pandemic, my husband and I moved from Rochester to the Finger Lakes, where we found a property with a barn perfect for a metalwork shop. The barn had an ironwood tree growing near it, which felt like destiny, and thus, [Ironwood Studios Inc.](https://ironwoodstudiosinc.com/ "Ironwood Studios website") was born. We envisioned a creative space where people could come, learn, and create. Since then, I've been conducting Women's Welding Workshops and have taught over 600 people in the past two years.

__SkillHero:__ That’s incredible! What kind of projects do your students work on in these workshops?

__Stacey Mrva:__ The workshops are project-based, so everyone leaves with something they've created. The projects are designed to ensure participants feel accomplished. I cater to all different skill levels and walks of life in my shop, from beginners who may be scared to hold a welding torch to those who take to welding naturally. The goal is to build confidence and create a supportive environment where women can learn and thrive.

__SkillHero:__ What skills do you think are most important for someone beginning in welding?

__Stacey Mrva:__ Patience is crucial. Welding is a skill that requires perseverance. It's important to be patient with yourself and not get discouraged by initial failures. Learning by doing and continuous practice are key. Also, having [a supportive community](https://app.skillhero.works/ "SkillHero") can make a huge difference.

__SkillHero:__ Speaking of community, how important is mentorship in welding?

__Stacey Mrva:__ Mentorship is extremely important. When I was younger, I was stubborn and didn’t ask for help, which made things harder. Now, I have mentors who support and advise me, which has been invaluable. __SkillHero:__ What advice would you give to women or underrepresented individuals considering a career in welding or the trades?

__Stacey Mrva:__ The industry is becoming more open to women, but it still requires resilience. You need to be prepared to prove yourself, which can ultimately make you better at what you do. The skills and confidence you gain will be invaluable, and you'll find that you're sought after in your field because of your dedication and hard work.

__SkillHero:__ What are your future goals for Ironwood Studios and your workshops?

__Stacey Mrva:__ We're renovating the barn to create more space for events and possibly overnight workshops where participants can work on larger projects. I also want to develop a funded summer program to offer free workshops for young women, showing them what's possible and building their confidence through welding.

__SkillHero:__ What has been the most rewarding aspect of your career so far?

__Stacey Mrva:__ Teaching has been incredibly fulfilling. Watching people transform from being scared to feeling powerful and accomplished is amazing. Creating public art that people interact with daily is also very rewarding. But nothing beats the feeling of empowering others through teaching.

## Q&A with Drew Huey, Stone Mason
__SkillHero:__ Tell us about your journey in the skilled trades. How did you get started?

__Drew Huey:__ The [Warren County Career Center](https://www.wcsdpa.org/o/wccc "Warren County Career Center website")’s welding program was a game-changer for me. It not only provided a practical skill set and sparked my passion for the trades, but also gave me the extra credits I needed to graduate. I didn’t learn the best in a traditional classroom setting, so a hands-on learning environment was a perfect alternative.
The skills I was taught opened up opportunities, and toward the end of high school, I began working part-time at a construction company applying the skills that I was learning in my welding program. Once I graduated, it evolved into a [full-time welding role](https://app.skillhero.works/career-explorer/trades/welder "SkillHero Career Explorer: Welder").

But for me, after a few years of welding, I was growing tired of it. I admired the mason crew, often seeing them and other tradespeople coming in and out of the yard while I was stuck somewhere working on a weld. My company allowed me to shadow the masons and soon they started taking me along on jobs. My first job with them was working on a huge stone house. It was tough, but through that project I fell in love with masonry.

__SkillHero:__ What aspects of masonry do you find most rewarding?

__Drew Huey:__ Overall, the work is exciting and different every day, and I love the physical and creative aspects of it. The most rewarding part is stepping back at the end of the day and seeing what I’ve accomplished. It’s amazing to see a structure you’ve built from the ground up. Masonry is also a valuable career path because there’s always work—chimneys, foundations, fireplaces. Plus, it’s physically engaging, keeping me fit while continuing to work on my trade.

__SkillHero:__ How did you hone your craft in masonry?

__Drew Huey:__ There was a steep learning curve, especially with measuring and ensuring everything fits perfectly the first time. I remember one of my bosses saying laying stone is easy, but there’s so much more to it—like measuring out so you don’t end up with a weird measurement in the middle, and making sure everything works right.

There’s a lot of math and technique that goes into it, so learning from experienced masons was crucial. My first bosses were tough but taught me a lot about breaking bonds, doing corners, and estimating costs and materials. You can always watch YouTube tutorials, but hands-on experience and learning from seasoned professionals make a huge difference.

__SkillHero:__ What advice would you give to someone interested in masonry?

__Drew Huey:__ Get your hands on some basic tools like a trowel, slicker, and grinder, and start applying for any construction jobs to get your foot in the door. Skilled labor is in high demand. Joining a union [as a trainee or apprentice](https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/authentic-stonework-drew-huey-stone-mason-skillhero-spotlight-nduce/?trackingId=eoiPLoJZyuZMWZFtMj5wuw%3D%3D#:~:text=as%20a%20trainee%20or%20apprentice "SkillHero Opportunities") is another great way to start. Getting involved, asking questions, and learning on the job are key.

When considering specialties, repointing (repairing masonry that’s already done) is a great place to start. It gives you a good idea of how something was created, and through fixing it, you’ll gain an understanding of what could’ve been done better in the first place to improve the quality of the stonework.

__SkillHero:__ How has the industry changed since you started?

__Drew Huey:__ Everything has gotten more expensive, and there’s a shift towards using cheaper materials like stick-on stone, which is like molded concrete made to look like stone. While it’s more affordable and in demand, I prefer working with real stone. It’s more authentic, rewarding and durable. Technology has also advanced, making some tasks easier, but the essence of masonry remains the same.

__SkillHero:__ What’s it like running your own business versus working for someone else?

__Drew Huey:__ There’s pros and cons. Running your own business gives you freedom and the potential for higher earnings, but it comes with a lot of responsibilities and stress. You have to manage materials, handle clients, and ensure everything runs smoothly. Working for someone else is more relaxed—you just show up and do your job without worrying about the logistics, but you earn less.

When I am working for myself, it is a huge mental load. You’re responsible for every step of the job, including financial responsibilities like creating estimates and calculating taxes. But working for someone else, all those things are taken care of.

__SkillHero:__ What are your future plans in masonry?

__Drew Huey:__ I aim to get back into running my own business but with a team. Working alone can be tough, and having a team makes the work more enjoyable and efficient. My brother is a carpenter, and we’re talking about starting a construction company, offering a range of services from masonry to carpentry to welding. My future is all about creating a relaxed, fun, and productive work environment.

## Q&A with Mark, The British Blacksmith

__SkillHero:__ Can you tell us a bit about how you transitioned from being a chemistry professor to becoming a blacksmith?

__Mark (The British Blacksmith)__: I've always been someone who thrives on practical work. When vocational classes were phased out at my school while growing up, I gravitated towards chemistry for its hands-on lab work. Throughout my academic career, I continued metalworking, which eventually brought me to blacksmithing. The allure of combining my passions of working with hot forged steel and teaching led me to begin offering classes to spread knowledge about my craft.

__SkillHero__: How has your background in chemistry influenced your blacksmithing technique?

__Mark (The British Blacksmith)__: It's all about problem-solving, really. Both fields require a keen sense of how things fit together and the creativity to see a project through. That analytical edge definitely enhances the craftsmanship in blacksmithing, blending the technical with the artistic.

__Mark (The British Blacksmith)__: Teaching is something I deeply enjoy. My classes are project-based, which I believe is the best way to learn. It starts with demonstrating the basics, then encouraging students to take the reins. This method not only teaches them the craft but also instills confidence as they see their own projects come to life.

__SkillHero__: It sounds like you've built quite a community through your classes. Can you expand on that?

__Mark (The British Blacksmith)__: Definitely. What started as a one-time class often turns into a recurring engagement. Some of my students have gone on to apprenticeships, started their own business, or started working on their own commission work. It’s rewarding to see a thriving community of craftsmen and women, all supporting and learning from one another.

__SkillHero__: What is your personal vision for the future of blacksmithing education, and how do you see your role evolving in this landscape?

__Mark (The British Blacksmith)__: I see a significant resurgence in people appreciating handcrafted work. My goal is to expand the community of blacksmiths, foster collaborative learning and mutual support, and continue to push the boundaries of what we can create with metal. The future looks bright, and I'm excited to be part of it.

__SkillHero__: Taking a step back, what do you think we could be doing to bridge the labor gap in the skilled trades in general?

__Mark (The British Blacksmith)__: It has to start in high school. Many schools have phased out vocational programs, which is a real loss. __SkillHero:__ What has your career been like as a tower climber?

__Will:__ Being a tower climber is a job isn't for those afraid of heights - you’re climbing on an antenna hundreds or even thousands of feet up in the air. Sometimes an elevator or helicopter to take you up, but I've I've yet to convince anyone to fly me up past the 450-foot mark; I've always had to make the climb myself.

That being said, I love every bit of it—the challenges, the heights, the unique experiences each climb brings. The idea of being 1,000 or even 2,000 feet in the air excites me. The highest I’ve been is 550 feet, and even that was pretty exhilarating. It’s not just a job; it’s an adventure every single day.

__SkillHero:__ Let's talk about the difference between your job as a tower climber versus that of a lineworker, [a trade that people may believe is similar](https://app.skillhero.works/blog/what-is-a-lineworker).

__Will:__ Lineworkers are running power, [working on those electric lines and poles you often see](https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/inside-world-tower-climber-skillhero-spotlight-we-are-skillhero-fbkde/?trackingId=%2B%2Bbg2WI%2FYIbF4%2BDt%2BB43QQ%3D%3D#:~:text=working%20on%20those%20electric%20lines%20and%20poles%20you%20often%20see). As a tower climber, my world revolves around communication. Whether it's maintaining cell towers, ensuring 911 systems are up and running, or working on broadcast, which means anything from your AM/FM radio stations to emergency broadcast systems.

It’s a bit staggering when you think about it; there are about 120,000 linemen out there in America, but only around 14,000 of us tower climbers—or tower techs, as some like to call us.

__SkillHero:__ What got you into tower climbing?

__Will:__ I started back in 2013. I was [roofing](https://app.skillhero.works/career-explorer/trades/roofer) and hated it. My particular work environment was just too negative. So, I applied for a tower climbing job and got it. Started at $10 an hour, and from there, it was all about learning and moving up. I’ve worked all over the country, from Arkansas to Oregon, and even had an offer to go to Puerto Rico after the hurricane.

But through it all, I've been learning—constantly. The job's required me to take a myriad of classes, keeping up with certifications every year or two. Now, I’ve racked up close to 12 certifications, ranging from CPR and first aid to more specialized training that allows me to teach others about climbing, rigging, and safety practices.

__SkillHero:__ Can you talk more about the certifications needed for your job?

__Will:__ Yeah, there are quite a few. You’ve got CPR, first aid, and then there's rigging, how to inspect your PPE (personal protective equipment), and understanding OSHA regulations. It's a mix of online courses and hands-on training. For instance, CPR certification requires proving your skills at a facility. And then there's specialized training like the NWSA, which involves both written and practical tests.

__SkillHero:__ What’s the incentive for accumulating all of these certifications?

__Will:__ Beyond the subcontract requirements, they ensure everyone on a tower knows exactly what they're doing. It’s about safety, efficiency, and, admittedly, the pay bump that comes with increased knowledge and responsibility.

__SkillHero:__ How has the technology evolved in your field?
Will: The telecommunications landscape has drastically changed since I started back in 2013, with advancements from LTE to 5G, and now there's talk about 6G on the horizon.

In my line of work, these technological evolutions mean constant learning and adapting. For instance, we've transitioned from 2G antennas to installing sophisticated LTE systems. This shift isn't just about technology; it impacts the physical aspect of our jobs too. Older 3G antennas, combined with amplifiers, could weigh around 150 pounds, whereas modern dual antennas might weigh double that. The balancing act of installing these heavy components high up on a tower can be precarious, challenging, and sometimes dangerous if the right safety precautions aren't followed.

__SkillHero:__ Any particular stories to share based on your experience?

__Will:__ One vivid memory involves a decommissioning job where we had to carefully balance the old and new systems on a tower. The addition of new, heavier equipment nearly caused a tower boom to tilt dramatically. In another instance, during a 911 system upgrade, I realized I had free climbed part of the tower by mistake, a risky slip in attention that reinforced the importance of double-checking every safety measure.

The most intense experiences often involve emergencies or unique setups, like using a helicopter for installations to save time and money over traditional crane setups. These moments highlight the unpredictable nature of tower climbing, from narrowly avoiding accidents to managing the logistics of heavy equipment installations.

And then there was the advent of 5G amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought an unexpected aspect to our jobs: dealing with conspiracy theories and public backlash, including threats and vandalism. It was a stark reminder of the misconceptions surrounding our work and the critical role communication technologies play in modern life, even as they're misunderstood by the very communities we serve.

__SkillHero:__ How do you keep up with all the changes occurring in the trade?
Will: It's about staying certified and keeping up with training. The certifications help us understand the new technologies, how to install them safely, and ensure they work as intended. It’s a lot, but it’s part of the job.

__SkillHero:__ How did you get started?

__Will:__ I hit the internet hard, applying for just about any job I could find because, well, I needed one, and you can't be too picky in those situations, right? At that time, and even now to some extent, the industry's been on the slower side since last summer, but there's talk it'll pick up in a couple of months. That led me to looking into NWSA certifications and searching for jobs on Google. The thing is, this job requires you to be open to travel. When you think about it, there are more communication sites out there than there are climbers to work on them.

Through social media, like Instagram, I've connected with a bunch of other climbers. I've even been able to help some folks land jobs. And yeah, there are female climbers in this space too, proving the job's about skill, not gender.

__SkillHero:__ What you recommend tower climbing to someone looking for a new opportunity?

__Will:__ Jumping into this field back in 2013 was a game-changer for me. It's an incredible opportunity to soak up knowledge on so many fronts. You get into the nitty-gritty of how things work, like [getting a crash course in electrical engineering](https://app.skillhero.works/career-explorer/trades/electrician), diving deep into the mechanics of how our phones keep us connected. It’s more than just climbing; it’s understanding the backbone of communication, almost like [being an iron worker](https://app.skillhero.works/career-explorer/trades/ironworker). You’re laying the rebar, pouring the concrete, stacking the towers, and then bringing them to life with technology.

This job teaches you invaluable lessons, too, like discerning which mobile device to pick based on its band compatibility—knowledge that can make you the smartest shopper in the room. You start to see through the sales pitches, armed with firsthand experience of how these bands operate in the real world.

But sure, the heights can be daunting. It's easy to look up and only see the danger, not the beauty of the job. And yeah, it demands a lot of travel, which isn’t for everyone. But think about it—you get to see the world from perspectives most people can only dream of: 200 feet, 500 feet, even 2,000 feet up. It’s a different world up there. Amidst all the noise and chaos on the ground, the top of a tower is peaceful. It’s just you, the sky, and a sense of tranquility that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Honestly, if you ask me, this isn’t just a job; it’s the best trade out there. The view, the peace, the knowledge—it’s unmatched. And while the heights might scare some away, those who take the leap find a world up there that’s just serene.

## Q&A with Cam, Red Seal Carpenter & Instructor

__SkillHero:__ Cody, could you share how you pivoted from military service to welding?

__Cody:__ I entered the military [as a mechanic](https://app.skillhero.works/career-explorer/trades/heavy-equipment-mechanic), a role that resonated with me partly due to my dad's background in the same field. Once I got out, I was looking for something different. That lead me to [rekindling my interest in welding](https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/skillhero-spotlight-cody-us-army-veteran-structural-steel-m7zee/#:~:text=rekindling%20my%20interest%20in%20welding), which I had first explored in high school. It actually became something that I enjoyed, and ended up going to college for two years to get my associates degree of applied science in welding and fabrication. I graduated last year and started a structural steel fabrication job.

__Cody:__ It presented an opportunity to enter the welding industry and offered variety and challenge. From working on simple projects to complex structures, it keeps me engaged and continuously learning.

__SkillHero:__ Did any skills from the military aid in your welding career?

__Cody:__ Absolutely, the hands-on experience and attention to detail in the military were invaluable. In welding, precision is key, and my military background reinforced the importance of getting things right the first time.

__SkillHero:__ How did the GI Bill support your education?

__Cody:__ It was crucial. I utilized the GI Bill for my education post-military. It's a [fantastic resource for veterans](https://www.va.gov/education/about-gi-bill-benefits/), allowing us to transition smoothly into civilian careers with the right training.

__Cody:__ Ask questions and seek out the right training programs. __Cam:__ My journey wasn’t straightforward. I didn't plan to teach carpentry; it just happened to be a door that opened. I bumped into a former teacher who suggested teaching. Initially hesitant, I was eventually persuaded to try teaching at VIU for a “seven week trial period”, and that was seven years ago!

__SkillHero:__ Before VIU, you mentioned a brief stint teaching in elementary education. How did that experience influence your approach to teaching carpentry?

__Cam:__ Teaching early education wasn't what I expected, and lacked the tangible feedback that I crave from carpentry. Carpentry fulfills my need for immediate feedback through the physicality of building. __Cam:__ Problem-solving and an openness to learning are key. Carpentry is vast, so we aim to equip our students with a foundational skill set that enables them to tackle a variety of challenges, emphasizing adaptability and continuous learning.

__SkillHero:__ How do you see technology, like SkillHero's platform, enhancing carpentry education?

__Cam:__ It's about connection and awareness. There's a huge range of opportunities in carpentry that students aren't always aware of. __SkillHero:__ For someone considering a career in carpentry, what paths are available?

__Cam:__ There are two main paths: starting work and entering an apprenticeship program, or taking an entry-level program to gain basic skills before pursuing a certification. Both paths emphasize on-the-job learning supplemented by formal education.

__Cam:__ It's had a huge impact. Growing up, using tools and building were part of life. This background not only influenced my career choice but also how I teach, valuing hands-on experience and the mentorship aspect of learning.

__SkillHero:__ What's your favorite aspect of teaching carpentry?
Cam: Seeing the lightbulb moments when students grasp a new concept is incredibly rewarding. Our program allows students to build a house from scratch, offering a tangible sense of accomplishment and a real-world application of their skills.

__SkillHero:__ Could you share a bit about your journey into welding? What initially drew you to the trade and what aspect of being an instructor do you find most rewarding?

__Cal:__ I started welding when I was about 14 and fell in love with it in high school. I knew early on that a traditional desk job wasn't for me. After high school, I dove straight into a trades training program and then worked across various sectors, including construction and sales. But what truly lights my fire is teaching welding. There's nothing quite like seeing a former student thriving and supporting their family through the skills you've taught them.

__Cal:__ These programs are crucial. Without them, many students might never discover trades like welding as a viable career path. When I was in school, the push was always towards college, but not everyone fits that mold. Trades offer a tremendous opportunity for those willing to work hard. You gain a skillset that's invaluable and in high demand.

__SkillHero:__ Speaking of valuable skills, what challenges do your students face, and how do you help them navigate these obstacles?

__Cal:__ The biggest challenge is often communication and finding the best way to connect with each student. Since we're a private school, we have the flexibility to tailor our curriculum to meet students' needs, starting with the fundamentals of welding and building from there. It's all about making those connections and helping students see their potential.

__SkillHero:__ That's a great approach. Can you walk us through the fundamentals you emphasize in your welding classes?

__Cal:__ We begin with the basics—safety, setup, rod and wire selection, and polarity. From there, we progress to hands-on welding, teaching students to weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions. The real learning, though, happens when we start working on projects. That's when students really begin to apply what they've learned and hone their skills.

__SkillHero:__ How do apprenticeship programs fit into the picture? How do they prepare your students for the workforce?

__Cal:__ Apprenticeships are key. They offer students a chance to apply their skills in the real world, under the guidance of experienced professionals. In our area, there's a lot of construction and new industries emerging, so there's a tight-knit community working to prepare these students for future opportunities.

__SkillHero:__ That community aspect is so important. With welding offering various career paths, how do you guide your students in choosing the right specialization?

__Cal:__ It's all about where they see themselves in the future. Whether it's pipe welding, structural, or even artistic welding, there are countless paths they can take. The trade is always evolving, with new technologies and techniques emerging, so staying open and curious is crucial.

__SkillHero:__ It's clear the welding trade is advancing. From your perspective, how is it changing, and what does the future hold?

__Cal:__ The field is definitely evolving, with advancements like laser welding and robotic welding becoming more common. However, there will always be a need for skilled welders to oversee these technologies. It's an exciting time, with endless possibilities for those entering the trade.

__SkillHero:__ Lastly, what advice would you give to young people considering a career in welding or any skilled trade?

__Cal:__ My advice is simple: work hard and stay curious. Seek out those with more experience, learn from them, and never stop exploring your craft. The trades offer a rewarding career for those willing to put in the effort.

## Q&A with Steven, Electrician

__SkillHero:__ Steven, you embarked on the electrical trade later in life. What motivated this shift, and how did you overcome the initial challenges?

__Steven:__ Before I shifted careers, I was involved in manufacturing, following in my father's footsteps. However, the demanding hours and lack of fulfillment led me to reconsider my path. After being let go from my job under unfair circumstances, I decided it was time for a change. Despite the significant pay cut, with the support of my wife, I pursued a career as an electrician. Starting at $14 an hour, I quickly progressed, thanks to my hands-on skills and determination.

__SkillHero:__ What challenges did you face in the beginning, and how did you overcome them?

__Steven:__ Understanding blueprints and diagrams was initially challenging. Learning from experienced colleagues who were willing to take me on as an apprentice and mentor me, I gradually honed my skills. My early days were filled with commercial projects, but a job too far from home pushed me toward local opportunities and eventually residential work. This diversification helped me become a well-rounded electrician, capable of tackling any task.

__SkillHero:__ Your journey has taken you through various states and jobs. How has this diverse background shaped your approach to electrical work?

__Steven:__ Moving around a lot as a kid and working in different states exposed me to a variety of work cultures and practices. It taught me adaptability and gave me a broad perspective on problem-solving. These experiences have been invaluable, allowing me to bring diverse solutions to my work as an electrician.

__SkillHero:__ You describe yourself as an "everything" electrician. Between commercial and residential projects, do you have a preference? What have you learned from each?

__Steven:__ I've worked on many commercial projects, like LA Fitness and CVS pharmacies, but residential work has taught me more about problem-solving and customer interaction. I started with commercial work but moved to local projects when the commute became too far. Working by myself on a tire store project while still an apprentice showed me I could handle big projects. Both sectors have their nuances, but I enjoy and learn from both.

__SkillHero:__ What advice do you offer those considering a career in the trades, specifically electrical work?

__Steven:__ You need to really want to do it, and you must have a strong work ethic. Showing up inconsistently won't help you learn. People will lose interest, and you'll fall behind. The trade is constantly evolving, so staying teachable and adaptable is key. It's about dedication and continuous learning.

__SkillHero:__ It's clear you're passionate about mentoring and the trades. How do you see the future of electrical work, and what changes would you like to see in trade education?

__Steven:__ The trade needs passionate newcomers, and I believe that starting trade education in high school could significantly benefit the industry. Not every student is suited for or interested in a four-year college degree. Introducing them to trades early could provide a path to a stable and rewarding career. I also advocate for more apprenticeship opportunities, giving young people hands-on experience and a chance to earn while they learn.

__SkillHero:__ Reflecting on your career, can you share a particularly rewarding project or experience?

__Steven:__ Designing and executing an industrial laundromat from scratch was especially fulfilling. The project required innovative thinking and problem-solving, with no blueprints to guide the process. Witnessing the successful operation of my design and the tangible impact of my work was very satisfying.

__SkillHero:__ For the general public, what advice or tips can you share from your electrical expertise?

__Steven:__ I enjoy giving advice and helping people, and homeowners should strive to understand the basics of their electrical systems. Knowledge empowers them to make safer decisions and handle minor issues confidently. It's not just about safety; it's about enabling homeowners to feel more connected and in control of their living environments. It's about helping others and sharing knowledge, whether it's a small home project or explaining how their electrical systems work. I believe in supporting my community through my skills.

## Q&A with Nora Taylor, IBEW Journeyman Electrician

__SkillHero:__ Nora, reflecting on your career, what would you say are the most fulfilling aspects of trade work, and what benefits do you think are frequently overlooked by the public?

__Nora Taylor:__ The most rewarding aspects of being an electrician are the sense of accomplishment, camaraderie, and pride in craftsmanship. People often overlook the stability, as well as the excellent pay, healthcare, and retirement benefits.

__SkillHero:__ Can you walk us through what inspired you to pursue becoming an IBEW Journeyman Electrician?

__Nora Taylor:__ Well, I have 13 years in the field, and I was non-union for the majority of my career. The local union that I'm now a proud member of organized one of the non-union companies that I worked for. I had to take a test, and I passed as a journeyman. I knew that I needed a serious change. I was working dead-end jobs and struggling with addiction, and my life had spiraled out of control. Getting into the trades was like an awakening for me! I honestly knew right away that I had found my calling.

__SkillHero:__ On that note, what advice would you offer to the younger generation looking to enter the skilled trades?

Nora Taylor: My advice to the younger generation would be never give up on yourself. You can do anything that you put your mind to, I know it sounds cliche, but it's the truth! All it takes is a bit of grit and determination.

__SkillHero:__ Could you share some of the challenges faced during your apprenticeship and how you overcame them?

__Nora Taylor:__ So, I did my apprenticeship non-union, which was a different experience from what a union apprenticeship is like. I worked during the day and went to school two nights a week (that part is similar) but my biggest challenge was that I had to pay for school myself, all my books and everything, and I was told that upon completion, I would be reimbursed half of the money that I spent on school, but I never saw a dime of that reimbursement.

Another challenge that I had to face was being made to feel like I didn't belong by some of the journeymen within the two non-union companies that I worked for. As a woman in the trade, and a black woman at that, I wasn't welcomed by all, but I was by most, and that made things a bit easier. Not all non-union companies are like this. Some are better, and some are worse.

__SkillHero:__ What are some of the most important lessons you learned during your apprenticeship?

__Nora Taylor:__ Some of the biggest lessons I learned are: Always stay teachable!
It's important to be teachable in the trades because things are changing within the construction industry all of the time. You'll never know it all!
Also, be nice! You never know what someone else is going through!

__SkillHero:__ As a trailblazer in a traditionally male-dominated field, what unique perspectives do you bring to your work?

__Nora Taylor:__ I would say that I bring diverse problem-solving skills, as well as attention to detail.

__SkillHero:__ Can you share a moment when you challenged stereotypes or overcame obstacles in your field?

__Nora Taylor:__ On one job, part of my responsibilities was to handle all deliveries. I had all of the apprentices on site available whenever we got large deliveries, and all except two were men. One day, in particular, we got quite a large order of 4-inch rigid pipe. I jumped right in with all of the men and carried a 4-inch rigid pipe on my shoulder, stick by stick until the truck was unloaded.

If that ain't stomping on the stereotype of women not being able to pull their own weight in the trades, then I don't know what is.
SkillHero: What are some of the hobbies or DIY projects you're working on that you're particularly proud of?

__Nora Taylor:__ I'm currently working on my office in our new home. So far, we painted it and I began setting it up just how I want and need it. I'm also going to update the light fixture as well as the switch.

__SkillHero:__ Lastly, how do your skills as an electrician influence your approach to these projects?

__Nora Taylor:__ I love that I can just jump right in and take care of what needs to be done without second-guessing or needing to call someone to come and do it for me. I have a strong mechanical aptitude.

__Hi Melvin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?__

*"I am a 20-year Chicago certified Union Carpenter by trade. I graduated Valedictorian from elementary school and took carpentry for four years as my major at a vocational high school. After graduating from high school and from an accelerated program at DePaul University, I began my career as a carpenter in 2002. Over the next 15 years, I worked diligently to learn many different facets of carpentry and major components of leadership. I am a certified Journeyman with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC) and has received my Foreman and Superintendent training certificates and two leadership training certifications from the UBC International Training Center. On November 21, 2017, I founded PAC (Project and Construction) Leaders, a general contracting and construction management company, as the first step to materializing my vision of a broad and positive community impact. Adopting my personal philosophies, PAC Leaders is dedicated to serving clients’ needs with the highest level of integrity, honesty through ethical behavior, attention to detail, and best industry practices. Whether servicing past commercial clients like the Salvation Army or The Chicago History Museum, completing restaurant/retail build-outs for small businesses or executing scopes of work for new construction or structural carpentry projects, this is the culture PAC Leaders maintains and promotes.*

*Along with delivering a quality product to our clients, my goal is to ignite the next generation with a passion for the trades. Following the plan, I added to my credentials in March 2017 by becoming a National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certified instructor/performance evaluator/curriculum proctor. I have taught NCCER accredited curricula in the Roseland, Bronzeville, and Altgeld Garden Homes communities. Fueled by my passion for training, the forthcoming PAC Leadership Academy will meet the need for acutely trained tradespeople by focusing on proficiency in the trades while cultivating leadership mentalities in its mentees through a pre-apprenticeship program. As a signatory carpenter contractor, PAC Leaders has sponsored students already into an apprenticeship with the Carpenters Union. By creating an environment where students take pride in their education and the quality of their output, the Academy will become an incubator for future leaders in the skilled trades.*

*The third entity of the PAC Leaders brand, PAC Leaders Development Group, will spearhead PAC’s mission for community reinvestment. Positioned for real estate acquisition and new construction projects, the Development Group will focus its resources in disadvantaged areas and opportunity zones in Chicago. PAC Leaders (general contracting) and PAC Leaders Development Group will partner to tackle two major issues in Chicago’s inner-city neighborhoods: the need for community development and employment. By training and employing residents from these neighborhoods, PAC will involve them in direct efforts to improve their communities.*

__I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?__

*"It has not been an easy road. We are scaling, so access to capital will always be top of mind. Next would be skilled and self-motivated labor, which is one of the reasons we became a signatory company. We hired our first w2 employees, in the heart of the pandemic last year, since our projects were deemed “essential”. One notable project/challenge was a Medical Center that we renovated, while the parking lot became a Covid-19, testing site. Right now, I believe aligning ourselves with sustainable projects and partnerships has become the newest challenge. We are prepared to travel, obviously how we ended up in Nashville."*

__Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?__

*"As a company, we offer skilled labor and decades of experience to push projects forward and help stimulate our local economy. I have loved carpentry and construction for as long as I can remember. As an employer, we offer income and inspiration. I am a Certified Craft Instructor and have a passion for training. As such, I co-train a pre-apprenticeship program where we give individuals a solid foundation and prime them for entry into the unionized apprenticeship program.*

*We will be preferred choice amongst construction clients and an incubator for competent tradespeople and future entrepreneurs in the trades.*

*We are focused on shifting the culture of construction in Chicago, especially as it relates to minority-owned construction firms. The classification of Minority-Owned Business Enterprise (MBE) is a “golden ticket” that many larger companies will use by partnering with MBE companies in order to win bids that require minority participation. In these instances, it is evident that the impetus for these collaborations is execution of a contract, not elevation of the community.*

*Now, this isn’t to say that our competitors do not care about the community, but the chatter within the community regarding our respective companies is much different.*

*People understand that we are growing in business, investing in the people, and promoting an interbusiness ecosystem centered around a culture of “learn, learn-to-teach, teach-to-teach”. We are a for-profit business, but our focus is the education, employment, and elevation of our community. We want to physically build the buildings in our neighborhoods while psychologically and financially building the members of those neighborhoods."*

__Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?__

In the years after graduating from Chicago’s Lane Tech High School, Emma Williams was at loose ends and unsure of what she wanted to do with her life. By age 21 she was working in retail as a cashier, but not making enough money to live comfortably and very much uninterested in spending the rest of the working years of her life doing the same thing day after day. Emma wasn’t sure what she was going to do, but she had always been interested in electricity and how flipping a light switch illuminated the room or pressing a button on a TV caused it to turn on. Reflecting on this, Emma took the first step toward a better career as an IBEW Local 134 electrician with a simple Google search for “__how to become an electrician__.”

One of the first results that appeared on the screen was for Chicago Women in Trades, a nonprofit organization with a mission to ensure that all women who want to work with their hands and earn a good living have equal access to information, training and employment opportunities in the trades. When Emma researched the organization and found the Technical Opportunities program, her uncertainty about her professional future began to disappear. In many ways, the program seemed to have been designed specifically for someone like her who had never been mechanically inclined.

Emma quickly signed up for the program, and was soon spending two evenings each week learning about the construction industry, practicing hands-on skills, going through physical training and gaining the technical knowledge to transition into an electrical apprenticeship program by working on math comprehension and brushing up on her English skills. Each Saturday, she joined other participants in the program on a trip to a job site, where they learned about different unionized trades in the construction industry. Although Emma already knew she wanted to pursue a career as a union electrician, she credits Chicago Women in Trades’ program with giving her the foundation she needed to fully commit to pursuing an apprenticeship at the IBEW-NECA Technical Institute.

“__*It was very helpful*__,” Emma says. “*__They teach you the basics and bring you to the door, and then you have to walk through that door.__*”

Walking “through the door” for Emma meant enrolling in the unionized electrical industry’s Trainee Program, a yearlong program that provides an introduction to the electrical industry and practical education for prospective apprentices. The Trainee programs begins with an orientation day, followed by five unpaid eight-hour workplace preparation sessions to prepare trainees for an entry-level job in the electrical construction industry. Trainees are then assigned to an electrical contractor and work on a jobsite for their remaining time in the program, earning a living wage to perform general labor on the project. As someone who had limited exposure to the electrical industry before becoming a trainee, Emma reflects on her time in the program as a great opportunity to learn the basics needed to succeed as an apprentice.

“*__You’re on the jobsite everyday helping move material and getting tools for the journeyperson electricians, and I think that’s really beneficial for those of us who don’t know a lot about the trade coming into the program,__*” Emma says. “__*You’re spending every day getting people what they need on the jobsite, and that’s how you learn.*__”

As part of the Trainee Program, Emma also participated in Jump Start, a 24-hour intensive classroom instruction program that provides seminars on the electrical industry and guidance on how to prepare physically and mentally for construction work, as well as instruction on test preparation and basic work skills to help prepare Trainees to enter the apprenticeship program. Along with the Trainee program, it was exactly what Emma needed to take the next step in her journey to a better career as an IBEW Local 134 electrician.

“*__A lot of the Jump Start program is test prep, and it was very effective,__*” Emma says. “*__When I took the test to get into the apprenticeship program, I got in on my first shot, and Jump Start helped with that a lot. I was not mechanically inclined when I decided I wanted to get into this career, but with all of the preparation before taking the apprenticeship test I learned what it meant to be a good electrician.__*”

Now a third-year apprentice, Emma has continued to build her skills through classes at the IBEW-NECA Technical Institute and gain real-world experience through rotations with signatory electrical contractors. The broad-based nature of the apprenticeship program has also exposed her to different types of electrical work, providing her with a better idea of what she wants to do once she becomes a journeyperson electrician.

“*__When you’re an apprentice you don’t get to choose what you do, which means you’re learning about a lot of different things,__*” Emma says. “*__Because of that, I’ve found that I’m drawn to the way motors work. Once I finish my apprenticeship, that’s where my focus is going to be. There’s a lot more to electrical work than piping and pulling wire, and the programming and motor controls are super fascinating to me. I’m actually in a class for that right now, and I’m learning so much. It’s really exciting.__*”  

As an African-American female who’s also only five feet tall, Emma is defying a number of stereotypes about what a member of the construction industry looks like. And though she notes some of the challenges inherent in not fitting what many people might mistakenly consider the “typical” electrician, none of those challenges have dissuaded her from continuing to pursue a career in the trade. Particularly because it’s a path that will allow her to do something she’s passionate about while enjoying the many benefits of a well-paying career with ongoing education and training opportunities as an IBEW Local 134 electrician. She’s also paying it forward to help others like her who might not know that a career in the trade is a possibility.

“*__I feel like to get more women involved, we basically just need to be exposed to it,__*” Emma says.  “*__When I was in high school, I didn’t know anything about the trades. Once you learn about it and what’s possible, I think there are a lot of women who would find it interesting and something that they want to pursue. Whenever Chicago Women in Trades is doing their electrician day, I always volunteer. This is a career that more women should know about.__*”
